Pediatric Psychology Fellowship

The U-M Medical School Department of Pediatrics' Pediatric Psychology Fellowship program offers education and training in preparation for entering professional practice as a pediatric psychologist within an academic health center.

The majority of graduates launch into careers as faculty at academic health centers around the country. The fellowship aims to prepare for this level of leadership by providing clinical, research and teaching opportunities that align with a trainee’s goals and is guided by a collaborative and active mentoring model.

Eligibility & Selection

Applicants must have a doctoral degree from an APA-accredited program and must have completed an APA-accredited internship.

The number of fellowship positions vary yearly but typically range from 1-3 spots. Posting of positions typically occurs in November with applications due in late November to early December.

Salary & Benefits

Our fellowship start date is typically the first work day of September. Fellowship salary is commensurate with NIH guidelines for the year that the fellow begins and based on their experience level. Fellows are entitled to University of Michigan benefits as a Research Fellow.

Clinical & Research Opportunities

Trainees benefit from the rich culture and historic legacy of the University of Michigan Medical School. Clinical experiences in a host of clinics, both at an inpatient and outpatient level, exist. Typically, recruitment occurs for fellows on specific tracks. As such, the clinical areas will be more focused; however, opportunities to cross tracks and get other experiences can be an active point of discussion with clinical supervisors and research mentors.

Our faculty demonstrate strong commitment to research as evidenced by numerous NIH grants, publications and presentations. Fellows are paired with research mentors to help develop ideas and gain experience critical to thriving in an academic medical center. There are also several resources available on the broader U-M campus including centers focused on policy development, academic innovation and research administration. All fellows are expected to complete a Scholarly Activity Project mentored by a larger, interdisciplinary committee to demonstrate the culmination of the research training.

Education & Teaching

The Division, and campus as a whole, has several didactic opportunities occurring throughout the year. Fellows are expected to attend 1 didactic session per week.

There are also frequent opportunities to present to both psychology trainees as well as other learners in the medical system (e.g. medical residents). Finally, for those interested in gaining experience supervising psychology students in earlier stages of training, our Division hosts both graduate-student practicum and internship programs.
