Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship

At the U-M Medical School Department of Pediatrics, our Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship offers comprehensive clinical training and robust research opportunities, preparing fellows to become academic leaders and deliver the highest quality care to children from infancy through young adulthood.

Our fellows train within a diverse patient population and participate in a broad range of unique clinical experiences. Highlights include the Renovascular Hypertension Center—an international referral site for surgical management of hypertension—and extensive exposure to critical care nephrology in our busy PICU, NICU, and Pediatric Cardiac ICUs. Fellows gain hands-on experience with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), peritoneal dialysis catheter placement, and both native and transplant kidney biopsies.

Program Highlights

We emphasize multidisciplinary, collaborative care through specialized clinics, including the Glomerular Disease, Renovascular Hypertension, Systemic Inflammation, Pediatric Stone, and Dialysis Clinics. Our close integration with adult nephrology services, novel research initiatives, and access to programs like CKiD, NEPTUNE, IROC, cPROBE, and Cure GN provide unparalleled opportunities for fellow-driven clinical and translational research.

Faculty in the division lead and participate in large-scale, multi-center studies, supported by resources such as the renowned Kidney Epidemiology and Cost Center (KECC), the Institute for Health Policy and Innovation (IHPI), and the Child Health Evaluation and Research Center (CHEAR). As one of the top NIH-funded institutions nationally, U-M Medical School affords fellows abundant research and leadership pathways.

Our program offers fellows a wide range of training experiences:

  • Intensive exposure to acute care nephrology in multiple pediatric ICUs
  • Proficiency in advanced therapies: CRRT, TPE, biopsies, peritoneal dialysis catheter placement
  • Hands-on care for diverse patient populations across Michigan and northern Ohio
  • Direct involvement in clinical, translational, and health policy research
  • Participation in national research cohorts and collaboratives
  • Education in patient safety, quality leadership, and interdisciplinary teamwork

Message from the Program Director

Our mission is to train tomorrow’s leaders in pediatric nephrology through a balanced curriculum integrating direct patient care, research, and a culture of safety and quality. Our fellows benefit from a comprehensive clinical curriculum and participate in weekly educational conferences spanning both pediatric and adult nephrology.

We foster a vibrant research environment, encouraging fellows to engage in projects that advance clinical care and policy. Third-year fellows participate in root cause analysis training and may join the Patient Safety and Quality Leadership (PASQUAL) Scholars Program, which prepares them to lead quality initiatives.

Our collaborative faculty and staff are deeply committed to mentorship, education, and innovation in care. We welcome your interest and look forward to the opportunity to support your growth in this dynamic and diverse environment.
