Registrar Office

University of Michigan Medical School students' debt ranks among the lower third of all medical school graduates. Our graduating class of 2023 had an average medical school-only debt load upon graduation of $161,267, approximately $30,000 below the national average. (Sources: UMMS; AAMC)

Our low average debt reflects the Medical School’s commitment to keep tuition increases to a minimum and to maintain our high level of scholarship support.

Qualifying for In-State Tuition

U-M’s Office of the Registrar has developed guidelines for qualifying for in-state tuition.

We recommend that if you’re applying for in-state tuition, you submit your application at least three months before the term in which you plan to enroll at U-M.

M3 Step Exam fees: M2s were budgeted for Step 1 and Step 2 in the 24-25 year and prior. Moving forward, Step 2 will be accounted for in the M3 year instead. For the 25-26 year only, Step 2 will not appear in the M3 budget, because 25-26 M3s would have received that funding in their M2 year.
