Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Fellowship

The U-M Medical School Department of Pediatrics' Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Fellowship provide a unique training ground for fellows. The U-M Medical School and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital are at the forefront of discovery and care for children and young adults with hematologic and oncologic conditions.

As a tertiary medical center, we deliver world-class, precision medicine and offer cutting-edge therapies with a globally-recognized genomic sequencing program. We are Michigan’s only COG Phase I Center and feature one of the nation’s fastest-growing pediatric brain tumor programs, the Chad Carr Pediatric Brain Tumor Center, with unique expertise in Diffuse Midline Glioma and other high-grade gliomas.

Program Overview

Our three-year Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship is designed for people committed to academic careers in hematology, oncology, blood and marrow transplant, or cellular therapy. Fellows train at Mott Children’s Hospital and the Rogel Cancer Center—both leaders in clinical care, research, and innovation. You’ll join a collaborative environment featuring expert faculty across multiple departments and access state-of-the-art research resources. Our alumni go on to leadership roles as division chiefs, department chairs, and innovators in national and international societies

Fellows will train at an academic medical center with over 100 new pediatric oncology diagnoses annually and more than 600 inpatient admissions each year, with approximately 50 stem cell transplants and cellular therapies per year. Comprehensive specialty programs include Phase I clinical trials, neuro-oncology, immunohematology, sickle cell/hemoglobinopathy, hemophilia/coagulation, and bone marrow transplantation

Our team includes 30 dedicated faculty in research, patient care, and fellow education, 21 nurse practitioners supporting clinical services, and an experienced staff of clinic nurses, social workers, pharmacists, research coordinators, and child life specialists.

Program Highlights

Our training ground includes only COG Phase I Program in Michigan and one of twenty national Core Sites (BMT Clinical Trials Network). The U-M Medical School also includes a nationally-leading genomic sequencing program and is the home of MIBG therapy innovation for neuroblastoma.

We are leaders in research on genomic sequencing, bleeding/thrombotic disorders, neuro-oncology, nanotechnology, transplant immunobiology, and cancer immunotherapy. Our faculty members hold national leadership roles and serve as principal investigators in pivotal organizations and studies (COG, PBMTC, ASCO, BMT CTN, etc.). In addition, we are internationally recognized site for gene therapy for hemophilia and pioneers in non-malignant stem cell transplants for sickle cell anemia and other immune deficiencies. We also offer a NIH/NHLBI-funded T32 Boxer Training Program in Molecular and Translational Hematology.

Our fellows launch successful careers at leading academic medical centers and research institutions nationwide. Alumni from our program are engaged in basic science, clinical, and translational research, and hold positions as clinician-educators, physician-scientists, and leaders in pediatric hematology/oncology.  Recent alumni have continued their work at top national centers, including: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

Scholarly Oversight Committee

Under the guidance of the Dr. Jordan Shavit (Fellowship T32 Director) and Dr. Sung Won Choi (Fellowship T32 Associate Director), along with those within our division and institution, the PHO fellowship programs Scholarly Oversight Committee (SOC) is dedicated to helping our fellows achieve the desired and guided research project outcome, in order to fulfill ABP’s fellowship graduation requirements, while also having the opportunity to present at one of the annual PHO related conferences (funded by the program and typically approved during the 2nd or 3rd year of training).

Focus areas include Immunotherapy & Cellular Therapy, Precision Medicine, Neuroblastoma, Sarcoma, Brain Tumors, Bone Marrow Transplant, Hemophilia and Coagulation Disorders, Leukemia, Immuno-Hematology, and Sickle Cell Disease.

Research

Our research mission is to advance scientific understanding of the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that impact children and translate these advances into improved health care for children.
