About Internal Medicine
Excellence Since 1848
The Department of Internal Medicine is the beating heart of Michigan’s top-ranked hospital and the foundation of future medical breakthroughs.
The Cornerstone of a Renowned Institution
The Department of Internal Medicine is the oldest and largest department in the University of Michigan Medical School. That storied tradition began in 1848 and continues today. Within 13 divisions are more than 1,000 faculty members and over 330 residents and fellows – all dedicated to advancing patient care, education and research.
University of Michigan Health continues to be #1 in the state and one of the leading adult hospitals in the nation as ranked by U.S. News & World Report for 2025-2026, with seven of our medical-affiliated specialty service lines ranked nationally. U-M Health was also named to the nation’s Honor Roll of hospitals, the only one named in the state.
During fiscal year 2024, the Department of Internal Medicine published 4,089 peer-reviewed articles and was awarded nearly $200 million in total research funding.
