The U-M Medical School Department of Internal Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases is a nationally recognized division with an impressive breadth and depth of clinical programs and scholarship.

The division consists of 40+ faculty members, over $12 million in annual grant funding, three members of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, two members of the Association of American Physicians, one member of the National Academy of Medicine, and one Master of the American College of Physicians.

Open Positions

The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan (U-M) Medical School seeks a nationally recognized, dynamic, and visionary leader to become its next Division Chief of Infectious Diseases. The U-M Medical School Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases was founded in 1967. Since that time, the division has grown to over 40 faculty members and has become nationally recognized for an exemplary record of patient care, research, education and training. This position offers an opportunity to reinforce and amplify the division’s current and many strengths and to provide the leadership necessary to steward the academic vision and clinical growth in an expanding health system. The next Division Chief will be an optimistic, collaborative, and creative leader who will inspire talented faculty, staff, and learners to achieve impact across the division’s missions and in partnership with others in Michigan Medicine. The Division Chief will be a champion for innovation and have an inclusive leadership mindset that supports multidisciplinary teams functioning in a matrixed environment.

Clinical Mission and History

The Department of Internal Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases has a rich history. The independent field of infectious diseases was formed in the 1960s during a time when hospitals began experiencing an increase in resistant bacteria. In 1970, the Centers for Disease Control published a report entitled "Comprehensive Hospital Infections Project" which recommended the need for hospitals to establish positions for an infection control nurse and a hospital epidemiologist.

Michigan Medicine, ahead of its time, was already in the process of hiring an infectious diseases physician. In 1967, Dr. Robert Fekety was recruited, the first chief of the division, which set in motion the standard of excellence in patient care, research, education and training. Michigan was the site for foundational studies of C. difficile pathogenesis, a strength that continues today.

The Division of Infectious Diseases consists of over 40 full-time and adjunct faculty members who possess a broad range of knowledge in infectious disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and provide the best possible care for our patients. Outpatient consultation and treatment of our patients take place at the Infectious Diseases Clinic at Taubman Health Center, Infectious Diseases at Canton Health Center, Infectious Diseases at Brighton Center for Specialty Care, Infectious Diseases at Dominos Farms Wound Care Clinic, and the Charles S. Kettles Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

There are several outstanding programs within the division that support the Institution and serve as a foundation for clinical excellence and scholarly output. These programs include infection control and prevention (IPE), Antimicrobial Stewardship (AS), the Complicated Outpatient Antimicrobial Therapy (COpAT) Program, Medical Endocarditis Team (MET), HIV/AIDS Treatment Program (HATP), and Transplant ID.

Education

Our Infectious Diseases Fellowship Training Program provides both research-oriented and clinical training, allowing fellows to develop as physician-scientists or as infectious diseases clinicians. We value flexibility, and the learning experiences are customized to meet the individual goals of each fellow. Our division places a high value on the continual education of our faculty and fellows and holds weekly grand rounds and conferences to provide opportunities to learn and discuss recent cases, research findings, and up-to-date diagnostic and treatment strategies.

Research

Our faculty members' research interests are many and include antimicrobial resistant organisms, healthcare-associated infections including C. difficile infection, HIV and AIDS and associated opportunistic infections, RNA viruses, retroviruses, bioterrorism and emerging infections, immune function after transplantation, hepatitis C infection, microbiome studies and complicated urinary tract infections. Another major strength is the epidemiology of health care related infections and of opportunistic infections after transplantation. Several Infectious Diseases faculty members have secondary appointments in other departments, including Microbiology and Immunology (M&I), Evolutionary Ecology and Biology (EEB), and History, thereby fostering collaborations and enabling opportunities for funded research studies. Infectious Diseases faculty also have collaborations with other departments, including the School of Public Health (SPH) and Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics (DCMB). In the 2024 fiscal year, the division received over $12 million in federal, industry, and foundation funding to support our research activities.
