Members of the Division of Hospital Medicine have a variety of roles on the inpatient medical wards including teaching on resident services, attending on non-resident services, and providing medical consultation and surgical co-management.
In addition, the Division of Hospital Medicine has unique service lines that focus on specific populations, including those with solid organ transplants and hematological malignancies.
Our clinical programs continuously innovate and span the University Hospital, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, which is located two miles from the main campus. In addition to caring for complex general medical patients on general wards, a subset of faculty also care for subspecialty populations in our multiple services line, including patients with renal or bone-marrow transplants and/or hematologic malignancies.
The Division of Hospital Medicine is committed to the ongoing education and career development of faculty, fellows, residents, and students. We are among the few Hospital Medicine Divisions in the nation to offer a dedicated two-year research fellowship in the field. In addition, our division holds regularly scheduled conferences including ground rounds, morbidity and mortality and journal club.
Our faculty and staff are actively involved in scholarship and research activities to improve quality of care and patient safety, and are published in numerous, prominent journals. Areas of research include the appropriate use of urinary catheters and associated CAUTI, antibiotic use and resistance, and infection prevention and control in acute care hospitals.
The goal of the Clinical Committee is to create and maintain a diverse, representative group of engaged clinically focused hospitalist care providers to identify ongoing operational issues that affect patient care across all hospital medicine services and collaborate across those services to seek and implement solutions.
The mission of the Hospitalist Education Committee is to provide an unparalleled learning experience in an optimal educational environment for learners of all levels. The goals of the Education Committee include organizing, creating, and leading scholastic projects and activities, as well as enhancing the professional growth of hospitalists by enabling the development and honing of their teaching and mentorship skills.
The Quality Committee for Hospital Medicine serves two main functions for Hospital Medicine. 1) To perform quality assurance via peer review of referred and flagged internal medicine cases cared for on Hospital Medicine services and 2) to help direct, inform, and implement quality improvement initiatives for the Hospital Medicine services.
Faculty and staff representatives are involved with the Department of Internal Medicine DEI and Well-Being IMPOWER (Inspiring Medicine to Promote Opportunities for Well-Being, Equity, and Diversity) Council which facilitates multidirectional communication and supports initiatives to drive culture change.
