Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship

The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship (CCEP) is a two year ACGME accredited fellowship in the U-M Medical School Department of Internal Medicine Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. The fellowship aims to prepare and nurture innovators who are committed to high quality patient care and advancing the field of electrophysiology. The electrophysiology fellows are an essential component of the division, and our faculty are firmly committed to training the academic leaders of tomorrow.

Fellows train in state of the art facilities and develop their clinical acumen by managing the high volume, high acuity patient population at the University of Michigan Health System. During their training with close staff mentoring, fellows will gain expertise in the indications, limitations, complications and techniques of the diagnostic and therapeutic tools available to electrophysiologists and the use of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapeutic options for treating cardiac arrhythmias. They will receive advanced training encompassing complex ablations and cardiovascular implantable electronic devices with exposure to the latest available technologies in the field.

Program Overview

Through the CCEP core curriculum, fellows participate in regular didactic sessions including lectures on clinical arrhythmia management, electrogram interpretation, procedural techniques, basic science of arrhythmias, and reviews of current literature. Speakers include the clinical electrophysiology faculty, faculty from other divisions throughout the university, basic science and clinical researchers, as well as invited external experts.

In addition to the focus on clinical training, research is an important component of the fellows' experience at Michigan Medicine. Fellows will be mentored by divisional faculty and provided the opportunity to develop skills in clinical or basic science research. Research opportunities include independent literature review, development and implementation of clinical studies, statistical data analysis, preparation of abstracts and full manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication, and preparation of grants.

Message from Our Leaders

Thank you for visiting our website and for your interest in the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center's Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Program. Our program was founded over 30 years ago by Dr. Fred Morady, one of the true pioneers of catheter ablation. Since its inception, the program has remained on the forefront of clinical care and innovation and has grown to include many leaders within the field, including experts in complex ablation and device management.

The primary mission of our fellowship is to maximize your potential to become a world-class electrophysiologist who will be successful in any practicing environment. The clinical training offered at the University of Michigan is designed to train electrophysiology fellows to become proficient at performing standard and complex ablation and device procedures as well as clinically managing all types of arrhythmia cases. Through our quaternary center of excellence at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center and the Veterans Administration Hospital, we have a very high volume department that will provide exposure to all types of procedures including SVT and atrial fibrillation ablation, endocardial and epicardial ventricular tachycardia ablation, transvenous and subcutaneous device implantation, leadless device placement, device extraction, and left atrial appendage occlusion techniques. We also aim to provide access to the latest innovations in technologies and strategies and collaboration with other departments at the University will also expose you to unique and challenging clinical scenarios and procedures.

Our research opportunities are equally robust. Our fellows routinely present their work at national and international conferences and frequently publish their work in prestigious journals including Circulation, JACC, Heart Rhythm, and the New England Journal of Medicine. Research mentors include our clinical electrophysiology and cardiovascular faculty as well as members of one of the most prolific basic research groups in the country at the Center for Arrhythmia Research under the leadership of Dr. Jose Jalife. Fellows also have access to the resources of the University of Michigan, including statistical support and early funding for research and interaction with other departments such as Biomedical Engineering to develop technologies for the future.

In addition to clinical care and research opportunities, we offer a rigorous didactic series encompassing clinical and basic science aspects of electrophysiology including a strong exposure to intracardiac and device electrograms that will enhance your clinical training and prepare you for your Electrophysiology Board exam. Complementing this is additional focus on physician and personal wellness and a leadership lecture series that will help prepare you for a smooth transition to a career beyond fellowship. We are very proud of the wide range of positions our graduates now occupy including department chiefs, program directors, chief medical officer, lab directors, excellent community and academic clinicians, and company founders.

  • With a well-developed and structured didactic EP curriculum that will well prepare you for the EP boards; with direct participation in the care of many patients in all domains of clinical cardiac electrophysiology from catheter ablation of most complex arrhythmias to all types of device implantation and extraction procedures; with excellent training in clinical decision making in selecting the most appropriate therapies; with a leading research program in basic, translational, clinical, outcomes, and innovative research; and with many complementary activities that promote the physical and mental well-being of our fellows - we believe you will be ready to embark on a successful and rewarding career in clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

Salary & Benefits

The University of Michigan offers highly competitive salaries and generous benefits to our fellows and advanced trainees. Trainee salary will be commensurate with that of a House Officer at an equivalent level of training based on the HOA contract.

Research Opportunities

The clinical and translational research programs outlined below are at the disposal of all cardiology fellows at Michigan Medicine. Research opportunities are uniformly strong across disciplines, and fellows are encouraged to create new collaborations across the schools and institutes at the University. Over the course of training, fellows have been known to publish in high impact journals such as the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, Journal of the American Medical Association, and The New England Journal of Medicine.

The Michigan Clinical Outcomes Research and Reporting Program (MCORRP) is a cardiovascular outcomes research team that was started in 1994. The faculty and staff at MCORRP create and manage a variety of data registries for a range of cardiovascular conditions. The purpose of these data registries is to create comprehensive databases that allow measurement of clinical variables, including outcomes for quality improvement, as well as to promote evidence-based care models.
