Thank you for your interest in the U-M Medical School Department of Internal Medicine Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine. Our mission is to deliver excellent patient care, to develop new knowledge about the lung in health and disease, and to train individuals to be outstanding clinicians and researchers.
Our illustrious history commenced in 1928, when the Pulmonary Division consisted of the tuberculosis ward on the 7th floor of the University Hospital (referred to as “Old Main”). Since that time, the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine has much to be proud of. From our rich history to our cutting-edge research, patient care, and education, we continue to be nationally and internationally recognized for our work.
Our clinical faculty provide expert care for general and specialized ambulatory clinics, interventional bronchoscopy, inpatient consultation, and critical care services. This care is provided at the University of Michigan Medical Center, VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, and at outpatient clinics throughout Southeast Michigan. We have many clinical programs offering specialized care including our adult cystic fibrosis program, assisted ventilation clinic, asthma, sarcoidosis and many others.
We are dedicated to training the next generation of leaders in pulmonary medicine. Our fellowship program is designed to develop academicians, consultant-caliber clinicians, and leaders for the pharmaceutical and health care industries. Our Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine 3-year Fellowship Program provides outstanding clinical training leading to Board eligibility in both Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
We also provide training and mentoring in laboratory and patient-based research to Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellows, as well as to postdoctoral trainees holding a PhD degree and to graduate students. Additionally, we play an integral role in the education of medical students and house staff at the University Hospitals and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.
Research performed within the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine has greatly impacted our understanding of basic lung biology, disease pathogenesis and targeted therapeutics. New major areas of modern biology have emerged, including genetics/genomics, metagenomics, proteomics, metabolomics, stem cell biology, computational biology and the microbiome.
