The U-M Medical School Department of Internal Medicine Division of Hospital Medicine has six inpatient General Medicine resident teams. Four of these teams are traditional General Medicine ward teams and include an attending, senior resident, two interns, and medical students in their third or fourth years of education.
Members of the Division of Hospital Medicine staff about 80% of all teaching teams and are highly regarded as teachers and educators on the inpatient service. During time on the wards, attendings are expected to engage in small group lectures for their teams, actively use information provided in the history of physical for bedside teaching, and engage with the team in relation to medical decision-making or diagnostic conundrums.
In addition to traditional teaching teams, two unique teams - the Medicine Newburgh A & B services – serve as hospitalist-only teaching venues. The Medicine Newburgh services provide direct contact between an attending and two senior residents in two-week blocks. Members of the Division of Hospital Medicine staff provide 100% of the staffing coverage for these services. It is an opportunity for faculty to continue to share knowledge and highlight unique needs of the hospitalized patient while engaging with a paired team of senior residents.
Hospital medicine faculty are invited as the discussant to senior morning report and asked to present relevant topics at didactic conferences such as resident noon conferences.
