Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery
In the U-M Medical School Department of Surgery Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery, we focus on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the abdomen, abdominal wall and retroperitoneum, using laparoscopic and robotic techniques.
We have a nationally recognized bariatric surgery program, and our surgeons have special expertise in both simple and complex hernia treatment.
Clinical Care
Within our division, our surgeons use minimally invasive approaches, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques to treat a variety of conditions affecting the abdomen and retroperitoneum. We have specialized experience treating esophageal disorders as well as gallbladder and splenic diseases.
We offer a comprehensive weight loss and bariatric surgery program, which brings together surgeons, endocrinologists, psychologists, dietitians and other medical professionals to treat patients with obesity.
Education
Surgery trainees who rotate on our service gain exposure to a broad spectrum of surgical procedures using minimally invasive techniques and learn how to manage cases with a variety of complexity.
We also offer a minimally invasive surgery fellowship, which provides comprehensive surgical training in addition to extensive research and professional development resources.
Research
Several of our surgeons are leaders and members of multiple statewide quality improvement organizations aimed at improving patient care, reducing costs, and sharing better methods of care delivery to help more patients in more hospitals.
We are also pursuing new insights into the most effective treatments for obesity and metabolic disease and understanding clinical outcomes for bariatric surgery.
