Program Overview

The comprehensive TMJ and orthognathic surgery fellowship is a 1-year program to train oral and maxillofacial surgeons the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of patients with orthopedic temporomandibular joint disorders as well as associated skeletal and occlusal conditions.

Fellows can expect:

  • Excellent clinical exposure: Fellows will manage a high volume of advanced TMJ arthroscopy, total TMJ arthroplasty and TMJ orthognathic cases at Michigan Medicine.
  • Skilled teaching faculty: Core faculty are fellowship trained and both TMJ and orthognathic surgery are major areas of focus in their practices.
  • Career opportunities: Fellows graduating from our program will have unique skills that makes them well positioned to lead in academic surgery, research, and organized healthcare, or gain a competitive advantage in private practice by offering advanced arthroscopic surgery to their communities.

Clinical Experience

The fellowship is a one-year fellowship that is focused on the comprehensive surgical management of TMJ disorders and dentofacial deformities, from minimal invasive arthroscopic approaches to total joint arthroplasty, and maxillofacial osteotomies for the management of skeletal growth anomalies.

Fellows will have the opportunity to attend education conferences and courses to enhance their experience and will participate in a variety of educational conferences within our section.

Curriculum

Fellows will develop the skills to assess and diagnose a variety of routine and complex TMJ and skeletal growth anomalies in adult and pediatric populations, integrating clinical experience with evidence-based data to develop personalized treatment approaches. Fellows will develop proficiency in the full spectrum of TMJ surgeries including arthrocentesis, basic and advanced arthroscopy, open arthroplasty with discopexy, combined discopexy with orthognathic surgery, open discectomy with/without interpositional tissue, and total TMJ arthroplasty (TJR) with and without simultaneous orthognathic surgery.

Research & Academic Opportunities

Cutting-edge clinical, benchtop and translational research opportunities exist in TMJ surgery. New scientific research in this area can have a profound impact on the specialty and care of patients with a variety of TMJ disorders. Fellows will have teaching and research opportunities, and will use the scientific method to critically appraise the literature. The fellow is expected to carry out at least one research project which will be submitted for publication.
