Division of Colorectal Surgery
The U-M Medical School Department of Surgery Division of Colorectal Surgery treats benign and malignant conditions of the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus, using both open and laparoscopic surgical techniques.
We provide multidisciplinary care through the U-M Rogel Cancer Center and the Michigan Bowel Control Program. Our goal is to provide individualized care for each patient, including the education and support they need to heal over time.
Clinical Care
Our approach relies on a team of multidisciplinary experts, including colorectal surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and others to provide patients with colorectal diseases and conditions the best possible care. We have specialized expertise in treating colon and rectal cancers, including complex resections where cancer has metastasized to nearby organs.
Our surgeons also work closely with a variety of experts to provide surgical services for Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, constipation, fecal incontinence and other pelvic floor disorders. We also offer colonoscopies and endorectal ultrasounds to diagnose, screen and monitor colorectal conditions.
Education
Surgery trainees who rotate on our service get a comprehensive education on all aspects of colorectal surgery and learn how to manage everything from routine cases to more advanced, complex diseases.
Our surgeons partner with Trinity Health to train fellows in the Colon & Rectal Surgery Fellowship.
Research
Our division is known for research centered on quality improvement in colorectal cancer surgery, as well as global surgery initiatives aimed at elevating colon and rectal surgery specialists to the highest standards, equipping them to deliver safe and top-tier care.
