The U-M Medical School Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program welcomes applicants who’ve completed dental school and who seek an integrated clinical and academic program covering the breadth and depth of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

In this program, trainees spend about 2 years in medical school and 4 years rotating on surgical services, with a minimum of 30 months of oral and maxillofacial training.

Ultimately, our goal is to provide the training and support to produce oral and maxillofacial surgeons who go on to become the next experts in the field. Graduates meet the requirements leading to certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

What to expect?
  • Well-rounded and well-respected training: Residents study and train with a skilled cohort of students and faculty in the top-ranked U-M Medical School and U-M School of Dentistry. Graduates complete an MD, a 2-year certificate in general surgery allowing medical licensure, and a specialty certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
  • Expert teachers: With 10 full-time faculty, including 4 fellowship-trained faculty, we have one of the largest maxillofacial surgery teams in the country. Our recognized experts specialize in all facets of the discipline, including pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery, providing diverse and broad exposure to residents.
  • Unique opportunities: In addition to core maxillofacial surgical training, residents gain experience in microvascular surgery, one of our section’s specialties.
