The Resident Recruitment Committee holistically evaluates candidates for the General Surgery Residency Program. They assess clinical and academic excellence, leadership and teamwork skills, integrity, resilience, and a passion for academic surgery.
The General Surgery Residency training program is a participant in the Electronic Residency Application Service [ERAS]. Please refer to the ERAS website to complete your application for our program. Applicants will be required to complete the MyERAS application.
USMLE and COMLEX
USMLE and COMLEX numerical scores (when available) are included in the Holistic Review process performed for each application, however no minimum score is required to be considered for an interview. A passing score for both USMLE Step 1 and 2 and/or COMLEX Level 1 and 2CE are required to be considered for an interview.
Interviews
Our general surgery residency program will be conducting in-person interviews for 2025-26 with the planned interview dates listed below. Interview offers to will be sent to select candidates through Thalamus starting on the national interview release day on October 22, 2025. Applicants will have 48 hours from the time of interview invitation to accept or decline the offer. Interview scheduling will be conducted through Thalamus.

Required Academic Development Time
In keeping with our mission to train the future leaders in academic surgery, the General Surgery Residency program at the University of Michigan includes a required two years of Academic Development Time between the third and fourth years of clinical training. Applicants with Visas requirements which are limited to less than seven years will not meet the requirements for completion of training and will not be considered for interviews.
The General Surgery Resident Program seeks to train the future leaders in Surgery. Our Resident Recruitment Committee will holistically evaluate every candidate across a spectrum of attributes we believe are necessary to be successful in our training program and ultimately in a career as a clinically skilled, compassionate surgeon who provides excellent care for a diverse patient population.
