Apply for General Surgery Residency

Learn more about our recruitment opportunities for the U-M Medical School General Surgery Residency program.

The Resident Recruitment Committee holistically evaluates candidates for the General Surgery Residency Program. They assess clinical and academic excellence, leadership and teamwork skills, integrity, resilience, and a passion for academic surgery.

How to Apply

The General Surgery Residency training program is a participant in the Electronic Residency Application Service [ERAS]. Please refer to the ERAS website to complete your application for our program. Applicants will be required to complete the MyERAS application. We are participating in signaling.

USMLE Step 1 & Step 2

USMLE numerical scores (when available) are included in the Holistic Review process performed for each application, however no minimum step score is required to be considered for an interview. A passing score for Step 1 is required to be considered for an interview. Applicants are strongly encouraged to include Step 2 in their application and passage of Step 2 is required before the rank list deadline to be considered for the Match.

Interviews

At the recommendation of the U-M Medical School GME Office, the general surgery residency program will again be conducting virtual interviews. Following the submission and certification of our program rank order list by February 7, 2025, we will offer an optional, non-evaluative, in-person “second look” visit, prior to the applicant rank list deadline. We pledge that participation (or lack thereof) in an in-person visit will not affect candidate ranking and we will not alter our rank order list following certification.

2024 interview days will include:

  • Tuesday, October 29, 2024 (University of Michigan Medical School Student Day)

  • Wednesday, November 6, 2024

  • Tuesday, November 19, 2024

  • Wednesday, December 4, 2024

  • Wednesday, December 18, 2024

  • Wednesday, January 15, 2025

The General Surgery Residency program at the U-M Medical School includes a required two years of Academic Development Time between the third and fourth years of clinical training. Applicants with Visas which are limited to less than seven years will not meet the requirements for completion of training and will not be considered for interviews.
