Division of Surgical Oncology

The U-M Medical School Department of Surgery Division of Surgical Oncology provides operative care for cancers of the breast, skin, and gastrointestinal system.

We have special expertise in the management of patients with breast cancer, melanoma, pancreatic cancer, metastatic diseases of the liver, and soft tissue sarcomas.

Clinical Care

Serving as a high-volume referral center and backed by the expertise and the resources of a world-class academic medical center, our programs offer access to new treatments, including clinical trials and advanced surgical procedures not available at all institutions.

We coordinate each patient’s care through a team of providers in surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, cancer genetics, and social work. This approach allows us to support patients from evaluation through treatment to recovery, providing a true home for each person’s health care needs.

Education

Our division offers advanced surgical training in cancer treatment for the next generation of leaders in the field of surgical oncology.

Residents regularly rotate on our service and gain exposure to a variety of cases ranging from simple to complex disease and learn how to coordinate care alongside a multidisciplinary team of experts.

We also offer a fellowship in breast surgical oncology.

Research

Investigators in our division are pursuing research in several domains, including cancer and tumor biology, health outcomes, and the development of novel devices and techniques.

We’re interested in understanding how cancer develops and progresses and looking at new treatment approaches to prevent circulating cells before they become tumors as well as alternatives to surgery for patients with early-stage cancers.

Our faculty and trainees are also heavily involved with the Rogel & Blondy Center for Pancreatic Cancer, which supports translational research to advance the treatment of pancreatic cancer.
