Excellence in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery | Hospital Dentistry

Trainees at U-M Medical School can expect:

  • Unique case-mix and case volume: As part of U-M Medical School, a destination care center nationally and internationally, you’ll see conditions you won’t get the chance to treat elsewhere, including arterial venous malformation, avascular necrosis, and squamous cell carcinoma. Our multidisciplinary programs in craniofacial anomalies, sleep disorders, and oral / head and neck cancer treat patients of all ages, broadening your clinical expertise.
  • A collegial and inclusive environment: We pride ourselves on attracting and retaining faculty and residents who reflect the diversity of our communities, and we work hard to maintain a good balance between study, practice, and life beyond work.
  • An emphasis on giving back: From medical mission trips to Mexico and China, to serving the underserved right here in Michigan, our training programs emphasize the importance of health equity.
  • Co-located clinical facilities: With our central medical campus and our School of Dentistry situated within a 1-mile radius, you’ll navigate fluidly between spaces and patient cases — a huge logistical advantage that also makes life easier by reducing commute time.

Our commitment to educating the next generation of oral and maxillofacial surgeons and hospital-trained dentists begins at the undergraduate level and extends to advanced training for fellows.

What makes a great clinical surgery educator? Faculty and residents weigh in
Surgeons often gravitate toward a particular pillar of the academic surgical mission. Some shine in research, others are at home in the operating room, and some thrive as teachers.
