Division of Acute Care Surgery

The U-M Medical School Department of Surgery Division of Acute Care Surgery provides care for major trauma and burn patients, as well as the management of emergency surgery and critical care services.

Michigan Medicine is a Level 1 Trauma and Verified Burn Center, so we frequently treat the most critically injured patients in the region.

Clinical Care

Within our division, we provide care for patients with serious trauma and burn injuries and provide surgical service for emergencies and critical care medicine. Our trauma surgeons work alongside a multidisciplinary team of providers to improve outcomes for patients recovering from a serious injury. We have surgeons who are recognized leaders in burn injury treatment and provide a variety of advanced treatments for burns.

We also provide care for patients in the surgical and trauma burn ICU and have specialized experience in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), complex ventilator management, as well as treating conditions like acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and hospital-acquired infections.

We also provide emergency surgical services for patients with acute conditions.

Education

Surgery trainees who rotate on our service get a comprehensive education in all aspects of critical care and trauma surgery to treat our most seriously injured and sick patients.

We also offer an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Surgical Critical Care to train future academic and clinical leaders in the areas of critical care and trauma.
