What to Expect?

Our highly ranked residency program offers:

  • Integrated clinical training: Plastic surgery training begins on day one. The operative experience our trainees gain is one of the best in the country.
  • Three excellent and diverse training sites: These provide a complete range of plastic surgery services, from complex inpatient reconstructive care to outpatient clinics to cosmetic surgery.
  • The Plastic Surgery Chief Resident Clinic: Chief residents in their final year of residency have the opportunity to provide consultations and treatments with the supervision of faculty members.
  • A huge caseload: Residents have exposure to rare and complex cases you’ll find only at a large academic medical center like Michigan Medicine.
  • Focused teaching on all aspects of Plastic Surgery: Learning outside of the operating room and clinical environment is achieved through weekly didactic lectures, case conferences and hands on experiences in our microsurgery simulation center. This rich educational experience is complemented with exposure to nationally renowned surgeons and leaders in the field who spend time with us as visiting professors.
  • Dedicated time for research or other academic pursuits: We have robust support, including funding for residents to present at meetings and academic development time to pursue research interests.
  • A welcoming community: We like to call it our plastic surgery family. You’ll benefit from the support of a formal mentoring relationship with a faculty member and senior resident, from regular journal clubs and social outings to dinners in faculty homes.
  • A supportive department: The Department of Surgery is dedicated to cultivating an inclusive and diverse environment in which each individual can achieve their full professional and academic potential. This commitment is called the Michigan Promise. Trainees frequently participate in opportunities offered through the Michigan Promise, such as the Resident Leadership Development Program.
