The Faculty Experience

The U-M Medical School Department of Family Medicine is a nationally recognized leader in patient care, education and research, ranking number six in the US News and World Report rankings. Since the Department was founded in 1978, our presence has exemplified the principles of family medicine. Our 100+ faculty run six thriving health centers; educate 39 residents, on average 12 fellows, and hundreds of medical students annually; and foster a top-rated, innovative research program.

Our research program is consistently rated as one of the top ten funded NIH departments of family medicine. We are home to over 20 research and tenure track faculty with a balanced mix of physician and PhD researchers. Our faculty engage in multidisciplinary research, including major collaborations with the School of Nursing, the Departments of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, the School of Public Health, the Institute for Social Research, the College of Pharmacy, the School of Social Work and the Cancer Center, among others. Our investigators also actively collaborate nationally and internationally. In FY2024, our portfolio included $5.9 million in externally funded research, including a mix of sponsors with almost 70% being NIH awards. We maintain our own statistical and data management core, mixed methods core, project management and IRB personnel available to assist with research projects, and a social media and promotional group.

 Job Summary 

We invite applications for faculty positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate, to develop and conduct independently funded research focused on integrative medicine, with a focus on mind-body therapies, integrative oncology, chronic pain management, whole food nutrition, and herbal and dietary supplements. We are conducting a broad search for researchers with MD, MD/PhD, MD/MPH, PhD, or equivalent degrees and have demonstrated academic excellence appropriate for career stage who meet qualifications for clinical, tenure, or research track faculty appointment at Michigan Medicine. 

Our department is home to a nationally and internationally recognized group of Integrative Family Medicine Providers and Family Medicine Researchers active in health services, qualitative, mixed methods and clinical trial research, and dedicated to advancing primary care through multidisciplinary collaboration. We aim to expand our strengths and research capacity by recruiting a talented researcher committed to advancing integrative medicine approaches in family medicine. 

Responsibilities 

Successful applicants will be expected to develop or continue a robust, extramurally funded research program that complements current strengths within the Department. Any area of integrative medicine research will be considered. However, we particularly encourage applicants with active peer-reviewed research and a track record at the early or midcareer level to apply.  

Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, mind-body therapies such as mindfulness-based stress reduction, integrative oncology, integrative chronic pain management, whole food nutrition, and herbal and dietary supplements.  

We are interested in applicants engaged in integrative medicine research using clinical trial, health services, health policy, and qualitative research methods. University of Michigan investigators in the Department of Family Medicine can engage in research, teaching, and mentoring and have the opportunity to become members of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation and the Mixed Methods Program

Required Qualifications 

Applicants must hold an MD, DO, or PhD degree or equivalent in a relevant field, e.g., Medicine, Public Health, Nutrition, Psychology, Integrative Health Sciences. MD/DO candidates should hold or have the ability to obtain the appropriate medical license in the State of Michigan, as well as be board certified or board eligible in Family Medicine. Evidence of scholarly ability (e.g., training in health services research, publications in competitive peer-reviewed journals, preferably first-author papers, and independent grant funding) is also a pre-requisite. Candidates at the associate level are expected to have a track record of research funding and funding through active grants. The candidate should be able to carry out research tasks independently yet collaborate effectively with other research faculty, clinical faculty and staff. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Prior training or clinical experience at an academic medical center is preferred.
