Division of Women's Health
Our division provides general obstetrics and gynecology clinical care to patients and training to future physicians and advanced trainees in women's health.
The Division of Women’s Health (General Obstetrics and Gynecology) was founded in 1993 to support the University of Michigan Health’s obstetrical and gynecological clinical activities throughout Southeast Michigan. It is composed of academic specialists in general obstetrics and gynecology who provide exceptional women’s health care to the patients of our state, region, and nation.
The Division of Women’s Health has over 30 clinicians who care for patients within the Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, across 8 outpatient clinics (Briarwood, Brighton, Canton, Chelsea, East Ann Arbor, Northville, Von Voigtlander Hospital, and West Ann Arbor) and 2 ambulatory surgery centers (East Ann Arbor Surgery Center and Brighton Center for Specialty Care). In these locations, patients receive top-notch prenatal, well-woman, and gynecology care.
Our clinicians supervise most of the 5,000+ deliveries per year on the Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital Labor and Delivery Unit. We have also helped pioneer the redesign of prenatal care in conjunction with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) through the Michigan Plan for Appropriate Tailored Healthcare (MIPATH) in pregnancy and the reimagining of postpartum care through MIPATH postpartum.
In addition, our clinicians provide general gynecologic care through the Ypsilanti Health Center and Corner Health Clinic in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and the Hamilton Community Health Network in Flint, Michigan. We also provide specialized gynecologic care for pediatric and adolescent patients, patients with complex vulvovaginal diseases through the Vulvar Disease Clinic, and patients with lower genital tract dysplasia through the Colposcopy Clinic.
Our clinicians lead medical school courses and hands-on training where students learn the foundational basic and clinical science relevant to the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
We also play a critical role in teaching residents how to provide comprehensive, full-scope general obstetrics and gynecology care across the inpatient and outpatient setting and in surgical care. We supervise residents in the prenatal care continuity clinic and emergency department rotations.
Finally, our clinicians lead the Global Women’s Health Advanced Training Program through which trainees gain clinical and research skills critical for global women’s health work, and the Women’s Health Advanced Training Program which strives to expand the trainee’s expertise in the practice of clinical women’s health care.
The Global Women's Health Advanced Training Program helps advanced trainees identify their paths as future leaders in global women’s health and to provide them with resources for success.
The Women's Health Advanced Training Program is a one-year clinically-focused program that provides trainees with a multidisciplinary experience to expand their expertise and focus in the field of Women’s Health.
The Women’s Health Division has 5 key areas of scholarly work including medical education, health policy effectiveness, optimization of maternal and newborn outcomes, vulvar disease, and global health. Our clinicians hold 8 federally funded and 3 non-federally funded grants and have published 20+ papers over the last year.
