OBGYN Medical Student Programs

All second-year University of Michigan Medical School students (M2s) participate in eight clinical rotations, including Obstetrics and Gynecology. This six-week rotation gives students a chance to experience a variety of specialties and develop the surgical knowledge and clinical skills they'll need as a physician, regardless of their ultimate choice of specialty.

In addition, we offer 12 electives for medical students interested in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Goals of the Program

The U-M Medical School Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology introduces medical students to the wide scope of ObGyn practice and provides a unique educational experience involving close interaction with educators and a hands-on approach to learning by doing, all while providing excellent care to a diverse population of patients.

What you will learn

Medical students rotating through Obstetrics and Gynecology will work alongside faculty, fellows, and residents to develop an appreciation for the complexities of delivering comprehensive women’s healthcare.

Through clinical experience, didactic sessions, and case-based learning, our students can expect to encounter a variety of obstetric and gynecological conditions, build a strong understanding of general women’s health, and gain a better understanding of the multitude of subspecialties within the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Branches Electives

The electives we offer prepare medical students for residency and a successful career in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Current branches elective offerings include: Women's Health Integrated Science, Family Planning, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Primary Care, Teaching & Technology, Reproductive Autonomy Health Disparities and Justice, Research, Women's Health Policy, Gynecologic Oncology (Sub Internship), Maternal Fetal Medicine (Sub Internship), Residency Prep Course.

One thing I really appreciated about the OB/Gyn rotation was the ability to work closely with faculty. Outside of interacting and learning alongside numerous faculty and residents both inpatient and outpatient, each student has an opportunity to work one-on-one with two faculty in longitudinal clinics. This unique experience allows for faculty to really be able to see you grow and develop, and give you valuable feedback.
