Our program provides residents-in-training with an experience rich in breadth, depth, and balance. Our residents are immersed in all aspects of Obstetric and Gynecologic care, as well as specialized care in Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Urogynecology, Complex Family Planning, and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery.
Cultivating the next generation of physician leaders is core to our mission. Our faculty are dedicated to the education, growth, and well-being of our learners. A mentorship team of faculty and fellows help our residents navigate residency, develop their unique interests, and build the mental resiliency needed to succeed in their future careers as obstetrician-gynecologists.
The resident learning experience is enhanced by exposure to 5 ACGME and 5 Non-ACGME training programs, a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and robust clinical and research elective opportunities.
Diversity, equity and inclusion are not afterthoughts; they are values we intentionally weave into all aspects of our program, from holistic recruitment practices to the care we provide and the research we perform.
In the last five years, on average, residents graduate with 256 spontaneous vaginal deliveries, 238 cesarean deliveries, 18 operative vaginal deliveries, 30 abdominal hysterectomies, 19 vaginal hysterectomies, and 60 laparoscopic hysterectomies.
Residents care for patients in a variety of specialty clinics at U-M Medical School, including High-Risk Obstetrics; Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment; Diabetes in Pregnancy, Substance Use in Pregnancy; Cardio-Obstetrics; Healthy Healing After Delivery; Cancer, Genetics, and Gynecologic Breast Cancer Care; Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology; Transgender Medicine; Vulvar Diseases; Chronic Pelvic Pain; and Obesity and Reproductive Health.
In addition to caring for patients locally, our residents have the opportunity to work at multiple training sites across the state.
Core educational activities include traditional didactics, hands-on clinical simulation, administrative time for research and skills practice, a structured surgical skills curriculum, and structured patient safety and quality improvement curriculum. Our residents also participate in Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, Clinical Reasoning Conference, and Health Equity Rounds.

The Department of OBGYN has a long tradition of excellence in medical student teaching and our residents are consistently recognized for their role in the student learning experience. Of the nearly 1,000 residents at U-M Medical School, our OBGYN cohort has won at least one Galen’s Medical Society Beeper Award every year. These awards honor the top 12-15 resident teachers, as voted on by our medical students across all specialties. We also have a well-established FROG program (Future Resident of Obstetrics and Gynecology), which pairs applicants with resident mentors to guide them through the application process.
Throughout the four-year program, our residents are encouraged to explore their research interests with support from faculty mentors, a dedicated statistician, as well as other learning and funding opportunities.
Residents are required to complete at least one research project culminating in a presentation at our annual resident research day. They are also highly encouraged to submit materials to national conferences and to submit their work to peer-reviewed journals.

We believe that an intentional focus on personal wellness is essential to our trainees’ future success. Our program is fully compliant with the ACGME duty hour regulations and committed to providing a quality educational experience that emphasizes time for adequate rest and out-of-hospital activities.
Our department aims to create a culture of wellness by regularly assessing the wellness needs of our cohorts and prioritizing activities that optimize the mental, physical, and emotional health of our residents. In addition, each year, we select a Wellness Chief to:
- Promote and sustain the well-being of residents
- Support interns in their transition from medical school to residency
- Proactively guard against resident burnout and promote resident resiliency
- Educate residents in non-technical skills, including time management, mentorship, and healthy lifestyles
