Program Overview

The Women's Health fellowship offered by the U-M Medical School Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is a one-year, clinically-focused program that provides trainees with a multidisciplinary experience to expand their expertise and focus in the field of women’s health. The program is open to physicians who have completed a residency in Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics. We do not offer cesarean surgical training or procedural abortion training at this time.

Our program is a collaboration between Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Family Medicine, with input and faculty contribution from both departments. Many previous trainees have capitalized on this collaboration to explore the unique ambulatory specialty clinics in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as ambulatory women’s health-focused specialty clinics in the Department of Family Medicine.

The fellowship is unique in its flexibility. We emphasize individualized curricular development and goal-setting for each trainee in a focused clinical area within the field of women’s health. Past trainees have used the fellowship to deepen their practice in intrapartum obstetrical care, vulvar disorders, women’s sexual health, and perinatal mental health care. Trainees will combine independent practice in their discipline with 60 percent protected time to explore and expand their women’s health-focused clinical interest. Trainees will also present monthly didactic sessions with faculty to build their teaching skills and experience.

Our trainees come to the University of Michigan with a variety of women’s health experiences, expectations, and goals. We are committed to training anyone interested in providing women’s health care. We want to increase the group of physicians focused on women’s health care, consciously recognizing and supporting training physicians who are representative of the populations in which they serve. Our graduates go on to join academic health systems, private practices, and community clinics, and serve as experts in the field of women’s health.

Fellowship Core Curriculum

The Department is home to 10+ Board-certified and non-Board-certified clinical and research fellowships in obstetrics and gynecology. To promote cross-specialty collaboration, all trainees take part in our didactic curriculum. These are ½ day educational seminars on numerous topics relevant to clinical research and academic leadership.

Topics include research design and implementation, identifying funding opportunities, manuscript timelines and preparation, how to be an effective teacher and employment opportunities. In addition, the department sponsors social events for fellows across all specialties to further encourage collaboration and to help fellows build both a professional and personal network.
