Mid-Career & Senior Faculty Offerings

Our goal is to offer opportunities that enhance the experiences of mid-career and senior faculty at U-M Medical School.

Career development is often focused on junior faculty. However, the literature shows that mid-career faculty are least satisfied and at highest risk for leaving their institutions. The mid-career phase is also a time when faculty are most productive in their careers.

The goal of our Advancing Professional Excellence (APEX) Program for Mid-Career Faculty is to focus on enhancing the mid-career faculty experience and provide support for them to engage in the next level of career excellence. There are a number of initiatives underway that are geared toward newly-promoted and more experienced Associate Professors.

Mid-Career Faculty Symposium

Career development is often focused on junior faculty. However, the literature shows that mid-career faculty are least satisfied and at the highest risk for leaving their institutions. The mid-career phase is also a time when faculty are most productive in their careers. This symposium is a day dedicated to the development of mid-career faculty. The goal of this annual symposium is to leverage the knowledge and wisdom of our senior faculty and to help mid-career faculty reflect upon and engage in best practices to reach mastery level in their fields.

Audience

This symposium is open to faculty on all tracks, and would best serve faculty who are at mid-career and beyond. Examples include:

  • Associate Professors and Professors
  • Assistant Professors who have been in rank for 6+ years and are in or beginning leadership roles
Mid-Career Series

The goal of the Advancing Professional Excellence (APEX) Mid-Career Series is to allow faculty to develop peer relationships that encourage them to focus on “next phase” leadership and career goals and map out a trajectory for achieving them. We aim to enhance the mid-career faculty experience and provide support for them to engage in the next level of career excellence. This series will be ongoing and emphasize creativity, innovation, teamwork, and mutually-beneficial mentor relationships.
