Certificate in Global Health for Residents and Fellows

Global health has become an increasingly important component of medical education, clinical practice, and health research. Yet opportunities for residents and fellows often remain limited. The Global REACH Certificate in Global Health brings together trainees from across the University of Michigan Medical School to build a community of future leaders committed to ethical, collaborative, and impactful global engagement.

Through an interdisciplinary cohort model, participants will engage in interactive workshops, faculty mentorship, case-based discussions, career development, and community-building with peers who share an interest in global health. Rather than focusing solely on international experiences, the certificate emphasizes the principles that underpin meaningful global engagement: partnership, cultural humility, ethics, health equity, leadership, quality improvement, education, research, and sustainable collaboration across diverse settings.

Over the course of the academic year, participants will develop practical skills, expand their professional network, and complete a feasible capstone project or proposal aligned with their career interests. The program aims to help residents and fellows thoughtfully incorporate global health into their future careers while strengthening Michigan Medicine's global health community of practice.

Overview

The program is open to any Michigan Medicine fellow or resident interested in establishing or expanding clinical or research activities in an international setting. Participants must have a letter of support from their respective department's program director.

Participants will work through a customized curriculum delivered by experienced U-M/UMMS faculty over the course of six two-hour workshops, to be held in person. Topics will include ethics and partnership power dynamics; the global health funding landscape; research and quality improvement in global contexts; global health career pathways, and more.

In addition to interactive workshops, the program will include an global health-focused journal club, social events and networking opportunities to engage with colleagues and like-minded peers across the institution, as well as mentoring and career-goal sessions with curriculum leaders.

Throughout the yearlong program, participants will develop a capstone project or proposal aligned with their global health interests (clinical or research-based).

For the inaugural 2026-27 session, Global REACH will administer the program at no cost to participants or their respective departments.

Global REACH is currently accepting applications for the inaugural Certificate in Global Health cohort. Interested candidates should complete the application form by August 14, 2026. Selected participants will be notified in September with the first program session planned for October. The program will run through June 2027.
