The Dr. Arthur Fleming Diversity Leadership Surgical Sub-Internship is a 4-week clerkship sponsored by the Department of Surgery at Michigan Medicine.
The aim is to promote the development of medical students interested in diversity leadership.
Dr. Arthur W. Fleming is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School (1961-1965) and was a two-time class president. He went on to receive his general surgery and thoracic training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. After a 17-year career at Walter Reed, Dr. Fleming became the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Charles Drew University and Chief of Surgery at the King-Drew Medical Center.
Dr. Fleming had an extremely successful academic surgical career highlighted by being the first president of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, receiving 47 awards, publishing more than 70 papers and giving upwards of 100 presentations.
The scholar will have the opportunity to both have a structured clinical experience at one of the top training institutions in the country and develop connections with the U-M Medical School Department of Surgery faculty and residents. The student enrolled in the fellowship will be an integral part of a surgical team and will be expected to perform as a valued member of that team. This will include participating in the medical care of patients on the ward, in clinic, and in the operating room. Furthermore, the scholar will be assigned a mentor within the department to facilitate and oversee their experience.
During the course of the internship, the scholar will meet with diversity leadership within the department including the Chair of the Department of Surgery Dr. Justin Dimick. The scholar’s mentor and program staff will facilitate other meetings beneficial to the scholar’s diversity leadership development on an ad hoc basis.
Rotations are available July through December (July, August, September preferred).

All students must complete the supplemental application for the Michigan Medicine Department of Surgery. The supplemental application consists of a 1-page essay describing the importance of diversity to your future career in surgery and how this scholarship will aid in those goals.
Applications are typically due in April and are reviewed individually. Applicants will be notified in June.

The Department of Surgery is proud to announce the availability of funds to support Dr. Arthur Fleming Diversity Leadership Clerkships. The department will notify the applicant directly. The awardee will receive a $3,500 scholarship to cover travel to/from the home institution and living expenses during their time in Ann Arbor.
