Sleep Medicine Fellowship

The U-M Medical School Department of Neurology Sleep Medicine fellowship is an ACGME accredited program devoted to the development of fellows’ expertise in the diagnosis and management of sleep-wake disorders.

Seven fellows are accepted each year. Fellows complete 12 months of training with experiences in adult and pediatric sleep medicine. Upon completion of the fellowship, trainees are eligible to sit for the sleep medicine certification examination. Interested trainees may elect to remain as research fellows for additional training in clinical, translational, or basic science research.

As a sleep medicine fellow, you will care for a diverse population of adult and pediatric patients from throughout Michigan and neighboring states. Through your fellowship training, you will gain proficiency in clinical diagnosis and management, as well as in polysomnography interpretation.

Program Overview

Michigan Medicine's longstanding relationship to the Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Ann Arbor Medical Center gives our fellows the opportunity to serve veterans and broaden their fellowship experience. In addition to the outpatient activity, fellows gain exposure to inpatient sleep medicine consultations and have opportunities to engage with active research programs ranging from observational studies to clinical appliance and drug trials.

The University of Michigan sleep medicine fellowship is one of the most well-respected programs in the nation. Alumni from the sleep medicine fellowship have pursued careers across the world as clinicians, researchers, and entrepreneurs in private industry.

Program Aims
  • Train sleep medicine specialists to be national leaders in patient-centered clinical practice, research, medical education, and advocacy.
  • Provide robust clinical experiences, mentorship, and time for self-directed learning so that trainees can make informed fellowship and career decisions and transition smoothly to their subsequent positions.
  • Graduate confident and conscientious sleep medicine specialists who practice evidence-based medicine, analyze their own practices for quality assurance, and work to improve patient safety.
  • Provide a work environment that promotes diversity and personal growth and provides resources to maintain physician wellness and self-care.
  • Train fellows who excel at written and oral communication to enhance their skills in patient care and interprofessional education.
