Medical Education Fellowship

The Medical Education fellowship is a non-ACGME fellowship supported by the Department of Emergency Medicine at the U-M Medical School. 

Fellows are appointed as faculty usually as instructors. During the two-year program, the fellows work toward completion of their MHPE, most commonly through the Department of Learning and Health Sciences. 

Additionally, they will serve in a junior leadership capacity for the education team, for the student clerkship and/or residency team, depending on their interests. 

The Fellowship Director is Mary Haas, MD, MHPE and the Program Administrator is Eric Berry.

Our Mission
To develop emergency medicine physicians into experts, leaders and scholars in the field of medical education. Fellows will develop knowledge, skills, and expertise in essential competency areas of medical education.
Program Overview

Components of the program include:

  • Clinical – Fellows will have role of Clinical Instructor at the U-M Medical School and staff as an Attending in the ED.
  • Education – Fellows will develop expertise through a variety of practical and structured experiences. Fellows will complete a Masters of Health Professional Education.
  • Teaching – Fellows will have teaching opportunities in a wide-range of educational settings and will receive feedback on their teaching.
  • Research and Scholarship – Fellows will be integrated into the vibrant medical education community with the support to develop their own scholarly area of interest and expertise.
  • Administrative and Leadership – Fellows will have a formal administrative role as an Assistant Residency Program Director or as Assistant Clerkship Director.

After completion of the fellowship, learners will have expertise in the following areas:

  • Education Research/ Scholarship

How to Apply

Qualifications include Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine (residency trained) and a strong interest in an academic career as a clinical educator.

Applicants are asked to provide:

  1. Cover letter outlining their long term goals and the reasons for pursuing a Medical Education Fellowship
  2. Curriculum vitae
  3. Three letters of recommendation, including one from residency PD
