Our graduates will be prepared to become leaders in the rapidly expanding field of pediatric emergency medicine.
We accomplish this through rigorous training in an academic program that utilizes the resources of a nationally recognized university hospital and an urban teaching hospital. In each environment, fellows work with a diverse group of exemplary role models in both Pediatric and Adult Emergency Medicine who are committed to teaching, patient care, research and healthcare administration. As a large division within a strong academic Department of Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the U-M Medical School offers its fellows a unique training environment with a broad range of opportunities and faculty mentorship.
The fellow will spend most of their clinical time in our Children's Emergency Services facility in CS Mott Children's and Women's Hospital, a level one trauma center. We serve a wide catchment area around Ann Arbor but also receive transfers from all over the state of Michigan. In addition, approximately one to two months per year will be spent in the Pediatric Emergency Department at the Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. Hurley is a busy inner city level one trauma center with a Pediatric Emergency Department staffed by University of Michigan EM & PEM faculty.
Residents from either pediatric or emergency medicine disciplines are welcome to apply to the program. Recruitment will target academically oriented pediatricians and emergency physicians who have a strong interest in scholarly activity, teaching, and developing superior clinical skills.
Fellows entering the program from pediatric training programs will complete a three year curriculum that includes Pediatric Intensive Care, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Anesthesia, Trauma, Adult Emergency Medicine (including Critical Care), Child Abuse/Legal, Toxicology, and Emergency Medical Service experiences.
Fellows entering the program from emergency medicine training programs will complete a two year curriculum that includes Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Intensive Care, Neonatal Medicine, General Pediatric Ambulatory Outpatient Clinics, Pediatric Subspecialty, and Child Abuse/Legal service experiences.
Fellows complete their Toxicology training at the Detroit Medical Center Poison Control Center in Detroit, Michigan (required for Pediatric residents, experience available to EM residents dependent upon prior training).
Electives in all pediatric subspecialties are available through the University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital, a nationally acclaimed pediatric center. Electives available to our fellows include Sports Medicine/Pediatric Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Dermatology, Cardiology, Pediatric Surgery, Nurse/Tech and others.
The University of Michigan offers highly competitive salaries and generous benefits to our fellows and advanced trainees. Trainee salary will be commensurate with that of a House Officer at an equivalent level of training based on the HOA contract.
Current fellows are training to become future leaders in emergency medicine. We emphasize teamwork, excellence, and leadership while preparing our fellows with resources to be successful in their careers.
Fellows can choose between a three-year track for Pediatric residency graduates or a two-year track for Emergency Medicine residency graduates, each designed to prepare them for leadership in the field of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Below are the specific block schedules for each track.

A major goal of the fellowship is the completion of a well-designed study that is published in a peer reviewed journal at the completion of training. Fellows experience research training through didactic education, course work, and a mentoring program that matches each trainee with an experienced mentor(s) who work with the fellow on their individual scholarly project from inception to completion.
Other opportunities and course work are available and can be tailored to the fellow's career development. Fellows are encouraged to attend and participate in national scholarly meetings as well as submitting research for presentation at these meetings.
Fellows are expected to develop a teaching portfolio, similar to what is expected of U-M Medical School faculty, with the ultimate goal of producing 12 to 15 excellent lectures on core topics of pediatric emergency medicine. The U-M Medical School Clinical Simulation Center is an exceptional resource for supplemental learning and teaching experiences.
PEM Fellows learn individually and in teams. In team training, fellows lead the scenario with pediatric technicians and nurses. They practice medical decision and perform procedures. Fellows will also learn to to instruct residents and house officers in small group settings in this environment. The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship program also has access to medical education experts within the department.
