Message from the Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director

The U-M Medical School Department of Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a four-year format program that has two primary objectives.

We aim to impart the clinical skills and experiences needed to train the best emergency medicine physicians in the country. And we aim to provide the mentorship, resources, and curricular flexibility to allow these emergency physicians to become amazing educators, scholars and the future leaders of our field.

The success of our clinical training is fundamentally derived from our practices sites and our communities. We serve the high-complexity, high-acuity population of the U-M Medical School hospital; we serve the busy, community-focused hospital at Trinity Health – Ann Arbor; we serve the people of Flint at the safety-net hospital at Hurley Medical Center. Together, these three sites offer our residents training in the full spectrum of modern emergency medicine. In addition, our novel ED-Critical Care Center (EC3) expands our department’s critical care capabilities and our residents’ abilities to push beyond the normal limits of emergency department care. Finally, our pediatric emergency department at the U-M Medical School CS Mott’s Children’s Hospital rounds out the experience with exposure to complex and high-acuity pediatric care.

Finally, and most importantly, we train physicians who will help advocate for our patients and reform within the healthcare system; who are passionate to learn about healthcare disparities and work to combat them; who make a safe environment for all patients and providers, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, religion, gender, gender-identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, economic status, or any other quality that makes us who we are.

We are looking for people whose values align with our mission. We want people who are passionate about all aspects of emergency medicine, including the social mission; who aspire to lead and innovate; who are team players ready to collaborate and support others in all environments.
