The U-M Medical School Department of Dermatology Pathways Program offers formal mentorship, teaching, clinical exposure, networking and research opportunities for pre-clinical University of Michigan medical students with interest in the dermatology specialty, including those who are first in their family to pursue higher education or have had a non-traditional path to medicine.
By supporting early interest in the dermatology specialty, we seek to encourage applications to dermatology residency programs.
Formal mentorship: Students are paired with a dermatology resident to serve as their mentor throughout the program, with a faculty mentor assigned to each pair.
Didactic and hands-on teaching: Clinical skills training with surgical sessions covering biopsy techniques, basic suturing and cryotherapy, as well as didactic teaching on dermatology basics.
Clinical practice and exposure: Students have the opportunity to shadow in our general dermatology and specialty clinics.
Global networking: A seminar hosting a guest lecturer provides students opportunity to interact with a national leader in the field.
Research opportunities: Students may have the opportunity to work with residents and faculty on research projects and participate in our annual Michigan Dermatological Society Conference.
