The University of Michigan Medical School Department of Dermatology Micrographic Surgery & Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship reflects the broad scope and growth of dermatologic surgery and cutaneous oncology. Our 2-year training program encompasses comprehensive training with seven supervising faculty.
During the first year of our program, successful applicants will complete the ACGME accredited training program. During the second year of the program, the fellow will become a faculty member (Clinical Instructor) in our Department. This year is intended to allow further exploration of career interests and provides time to solidify the skills learned during the fellowship year.
Our training program involves: Mohs surgery including advanced reconstruction; multidisciplinary non-melanoma skin cancer management; treatment of melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and other rare tumors (over 1,500 new cases annually) including advanced multidisciplinary management.
- Eligibility for Fellowship Training
Qualified applicants will have completed a dermatology residency program which meets ACGME requirements by the specified start date. Board eligibility in dermatology is required at the beginning of the fellowship. Read more about ACGME Program Requirements. - Number of Positions: one

Fellows work closely with faculty in clinic, allowing for daily feedback. Fellows are formally evaluated by faculty quarterly & have formal 6-month evaluation meetings with the Program Director. Fellows are also given the opportunity to evaluate faculty, staff, & the program.
Fellows will work with Dermatology residents and medical students. Fellows also provide several resident lectures and surgery workshops throughout the training year.
Current fellows are training to become future leaders in dermatology. We emphasize teamwork, excellence, and leadership while preparing our fellows with resources to be successful in their careers.

In addition to the ACGME/ACMS requirements, we also track fellows exposure to advanced reconstruction procedures to ensure fellows are exposed to a variety of procedures.
Professional Development
Fellows are provided with up to $2500 for Professional Development, commonly used for attending a national conference or purchasing educational materials.
Parking
The majority of our faculty & fellows choose to purchase a Blue Permit, allowing them to park nearest to the medical campus, with a short walk to the clinic space. Blue permits are currently $781 for the year, with monthly payroll deduction available. Additional information on available permits, including no-cost options
Visiting Rotators
At this time, we are unable to accept visiting rotators. We do not anticipate this will change in the near future, but you are welcome to check with the program coordinator.
