Become a leader in health professions education, program stewardship and research.
The U-M Medical School Department of Learning Health Sciences Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program prepares practicing professionals to become leaders in health professions education, research and scholarship.
Our learners share a drive to improve their strengths as educators in classroom, clinical and executive settings by:
- Underpinning their educational strategies — and improving how to assess learners and share feedback— using evidence-based pedagogic principles
- Assuming greater roles in curricula and program development, evaluation and stewardship
- Diving deeper into educational research and scholarship
- Leveraging current professional activities to demonstrate mastery of core competencies
Graduates tell us the U-M MHPE program has opened unexpected doors.
Our innovative master’s degree program is the first—and only—fully competency-based and virtual program for early- and mid-career educators in the health professions.
This means:
- Learn while you do your job, rather than through online courses.
- No mandatory on-campus requirements.
- Structure, rigorous assessments, and meaningful feedback from faculty and subject matter experts to help you shape your leadership trajectory.
- Fully tailored to your job responsibilities and career goals – each learner’s curriculum is their own.
- No time-to-degree-completion requirement – you earn your degree once you demonstrate mastery of defined competencies. For some learners, that takes a year; for others, two or three years, or longer.
Applicable to all health professionals, including nurses, dentists, physicians, pharmacists, simulation center educators, pathologists and more.
Graduates of the Michigan Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) Program give some quick praise for their program.
Listen to what former and current learners have to say about why they chose the MHPE program, and how their experiences benefited from the competency-based course structure.

Graduates unlock new career and leadership opportunities in curriculum development and assessment, education research and scholarship, program leadership and organizational stewardship.
Alumni have excelled in new academic leadership roles, such as program directors and deans. They haveled program evaluations, guided organizations through policy changes, published research, secured grantfunding and won awards.
Many return to the MHPE program after they’ve graduated to serve as subject matter experts and mentors themselves.
Our learners are driven to enhance their skills as educators in classroom, clinical, and executive settings.
While the MHPE curriculum is not time-based, learners register and pay tuition according to the University's established schedule: six equal installments, typically paid twice per year (Fall, Winter).
If a learner plans to complete the program in two years, they may register for three semesters per year (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer).
Tuition is set by the University of Michigan Regents annually. For current figures, visit the University of Michigan Office of the Registrar Tuition and Fees page.
2023-2024 Full time (6+ credits): $10,261/semester (Michigan resident).
$11,203/semester (non-Michigan Resident). Mandatory fees: $166.19/semester.
In addition to tuition and fees charged by the U-M Medical School, MHPE applicants should consider additional expenses, such as:
Books and miscellaneous office supplies
- Personal computer equipment
- Travel expenses. Occasionally the MHPE program hosts on-site events, such as conferences, retreats, and workshops that learners might want to attend. (These activities are recommended but not required.)
