Research Products

Leading edge work in simulation training and evaluation.

Through its leading edge work in simulation training and evaluation the CSC has developed two products, The Michigan Standard Simulation Experience Scale (MiSSES) and the Simulator Value Index (SVI) Tool.

These products are available for free to anyone within the medical simulation community. The CSC only asks the designated citation is used when adapting MiSSES and that users of the SVI tool provide a completed Feedback Worksheet to the CSC so their data may be included in the future.

Michigan Standard Simulation Experience Scale

The Michigan Standard Simulation Experience Scale (MiSSES) Template is a working document that includes the six components of the MiSSES toolkit. It is designed to provide a framework for assessment, providing the option of assessing entire range of domains identified through a review of simulation literature. The template was designed to be manually adapted by investigators to specific use scenarios. Investigators can select relevant sections of the template to use, based on their own needs. Refinement of the toolkit is ongoing, and additional user testing will result in iterative improvements to the MiSSES.

Electronic versions of this instrument are available online through Qualtrics and Survey Monkey.

Simulator Value Index

Do you need help making the best decision about simulator purchases, or do you need to justify simulator purchases to leadership at your institution?

Introducing the Simulator Value Index (SVI) Tool

Developed jointly by University of Michigan Simulation Center and the Technologies and Simulation Committee of the American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institutes (ACS AEI) Consortium, the SVI tool is founded on scientific evidence from the medical simulation community and designed to to facilitate decision-making during the simulator evaluation and purchase process via a standardized mechanism.

We invite you to use the SVI Tool, but ask something in return:
When you do use the Tool (an excel spreadsheet) please return any completed forms to Dr. Deb Rooney, so your data may be compiled and shared with other simulation centers.

For more information about the SVI Tool, please access video via YouTube, ACS AEI Best Practice: Simulator Selection Process.
