Medical Student Clinical Research Fellowship

The U-M Medical School Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery's Medical Student Clinical Research Fellowship is a 9-month research position designed for medical students between their third and fourth year of medical school. 

This opportunity offers clinical research education to support future careers as clinician-scientists with training in electronic data capture, manuscript writing, clinical trial coordination and research presentations. The Michigan Otolaryngology Research Education (MORE) R25 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship provides a stipend and discretionary support for research materials.

Education Objectives

The primary objective of the medical student research fellowship is to prepare participants for a career in academic otolaryngology with both research skills and academic mentorship in preparation for the otolaryngology residency application cycle.

Skills learned during the research experience include:

  • Proficiency in electronic data capture with software such as REDCap
  • Competency in IRB document, manuscript and grant writing
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary team environments (audiology, speech-language pathology, pathology, neuroradiology, medical oncology, radiation oncology) and clinical trial coordination
  • Research presentations in both intramural and extramural settings

The fellow has the opportunity to work on clinical projects led by faculty members throughout the department. A faculty mentor meets with the student on a regular basis to ensure that research goals and deadlines are met and necessary resources are available.
