Albert DiPiero, MD, MPH, FACP

Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine

Education & Career: Albert DiPiero, MD, MPH, FACP joined the Division of General Medicine as a part-time Adjunct Assistant Professor on April 1, 2024, and will be practicing at the Taubman Medical Health Center. He completed his undergraduate education here in Ann Arbor before going to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. He stayed at USCF for his residency in Internal Medicine. Prior to coming to Michigan Medicine, he has worked the past 26 years as a primary care physician-educator and Associate Professor at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. He has spent his professional career as a practicing general internist and as a healthcare entrepreneur who has founded and brought to market multiple healthcare companies. Most recently he built ZoomCare up from scratch to become the leading on-demand health system in the Pacific Northwest, with 40 locations in Oregon and Washington. 

Clinical Interests: Complex chronic illness management, fitness and health promotion through lifestyle modification, and innovation in healthcare based on the intersection of technology, patient empowerment, and easy clinical access.

Hobbies: He and his family have moved back to his hometown in Michigan to be closer to extended family. Outside of work, he spends most of his time with his wife trying to figure out how to raise two teenagers into contributing members of society.


Mark Mulcaire-Jones, MD

Clinical Instructor in Internal Medicine

Education & Career: Mark Mulcaire-Jones, MD joined the Division of General Medicine as a Clinical Instructor on April 1, 2024, and will be practicing at the West Ann Arbor Health Center. He graduated medical school from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He then completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT. Prior to joining Michigan Medicine, he worked as a hospitalist for over 10 years. His most recent hospitalist position was at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City, UT where he worked on both the teaching and non-teaching services. Dr. Mulcaire-Jones is board-certified in Internal Medicine.

Clinical Interests: Post-hospital discharge care, care for chronically ill adults, and preventive care.

Hobbies: In his free time Dr. Mulcaire-Jones enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 kids, cooking and playing ice hockey. 


Ashley Baronner, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine

Education & Career: Ashley Baronner, MD joined the Division of General Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor on July 1, 2024, and will be practicing at the Briarwood Medical Group. Dr. Baronner is a graduate of Sidney Kimmel Medical College (formerly Jefferson Medical College) in Philadelphia, PA. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Dartmouth- Hitchcock Hospital in Lebanon, NH. During residency, she completed additional training at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice focusing on the fundamentals of value-based health care. Prior to joining Michigan Medicine, Dr. Baronner worked as an Academic Hospitalist at The Ohio State University Medical Center for three years in Columbus, OH and spent one year as an Academic Hospitalist at Michigan Medicine. She transitioned to General Medicine to have greater continuity with patients and increase her focus on preventative medicine. 

Clinical Interests: Medical education, preventative care, and women's health.

Hobbies: Running, cross country skiing, and spending time with her husband and daughter. 


Alexander Chaitoff, MD, MPH

Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine

Education & Career: Alexander Chaitoff, MD, MPH joined the Division of General Medicine as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor on July 1, 2024. He will be practicing clinically at the Ann Arbor VA and conducting research at both the University of Michigan and at the VA. Alex is a graduate of the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. Prior to joining Michigan Medicine, he worked as a hospitalist in the Mass General Brigham system in Boston while completing a research fellowship in implementation science in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. 

Clinical Interests: His professional interests include optimizing medications for older adults by better understanding the impact of age and frailty on the risks and benefits of treatments and determining low-cost, time-efficient ways to increase evidenced-based prescribing in general medicine settings. 

Hobbies: In his free time, Alex enjoys spending time with his family (including 3 pets), cooking, running, and watching just about everything on Netflix/HBO/HULU. A sports fan, Alex also closely follows the teams associated with his undergrad alma mater, THE Ohio State University.


Asim Kagzi, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine

Education & Career: Asim Kagzi, MD joined the Division of General Medicine as a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor on July 1, 2024, at the Northville Health Center. He completed an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 2005 & graduated from Saba University School of Medicine in 2011. He completed Internal Medicine residency at Saint Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac, MI in 2014. He worked as a hospitalist at The Ohio State University while at the same time participating in research projects in the Allergy & Immunology department from 2014-2016. He moved back to Michigan to work as a hospitalist at DMC after his wife matched at the Wayne State University IM program in 2016. In the fall of 2019, he transitioned to outpatient medicine as he believed he could make more of an impact as a provider preventing flairs of chronic disease than treating the flairs inpatient. He also had an interest in teaching residents and student residents at Wayne State University school of medicine at the DMC and overtime became a celebrated teacher, preceptor, and an APD. To better serve the patient population in Detroit and Southfield, he became board certified in obesity medicine. He also helped confound an addiction medicine consult service inpatient at the DMC with multidisciplinary team members and he later became Board Certified in Addiction Medicine in 2023. 

Clinical Interests: Chronic diseases, obesity medicine, and addiction medicine.

Hobbies: In his free time, he enjoys weightlifting, playing and watching tennis, traveling, fantasy football and most importantly spending time with his family.


Stacy Lang, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor, Internal Medicine & Pediatrics

Education & Career: Stacy Lang, MD joined the Division of General Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor on July 1, 2024, at the Brighton Med/Peds Health Center. She received her medical degree from the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency training at the University of Michigan in 2024. Prior to medical school, she spent a year as a college and career adviser for high school students through AmeriCorps.

Clinical Interests: Primary care for patients of all ages with special clinical interests in preventative care, nutrition, weight management, mental health, and ADHD. 

Hobbies: In her free time, she enjoys cooking, traveling, practicing yoga, and spending time with her husband and two dogs. 


Adam Markovitz, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine

Education & Career: Adam Markovitz, MD, PhD joined the Division of General Medicine as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor on August 1, 2024, and will be practicing at the Taubman Health Center. He is a primary care doctor and health policy researcher. He completed his undergraduate training at Yale College. He completed his MD, PhD (health policy economics), and Internal Medicine residency at the University of Michigan. Long-term, he seeks to improve population health and reduce health care spending by testing new models of paying for health care. His research focuses on the effects of value-based payment reforms and has been published in the BMJ, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, and Health Affairs. His PhD dissertation on Medicare accountable care organizations was funded by an AHRQ Dissertation Award and was awarded the Horowitz Foundation for Overall Most Outstanding Project of the Year in Social Policy. 

Clinical Interests: His clinical interests including primary and preventive care and care for patients with complex medical and social conditions. 

Hobbies: In his free time, Dr. Markovitz enjoys biking, hiking, live music in Detroit, and spending time with his wife Allison, two daughters, Mischa and Chiara, and extended family in Ann Arbor.


Aleatha Reitsma, MD, FACP

Clinical Instructor in Internal Medicine

Education & Career: Aleatha Reitsma, MD, FACP joined the Division of General Medicine as a full-time Clinical Instructor on August 1, 2024, and will be practicing at the Brighton Health Center.  She is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency and served as a Chief Medical Resident at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Prior to joining Michigan Medicine, she served as a Core Faculty member and Academic Hospitalist at the Internal Medicine Residency Program at NCH Healthcare System (a Mayo Clinic Care Network Member) in Naples Florida where she served as volunteer Assistant Professor at University of Central Florida College of Medicine and taught Categorical and Transitional program residents as well as third and fourth-year medical students. Prior to her role at NCH, she was an Academic Hospitalist at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor Michigan where she taught both Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residents as well as medical students. Although she has spent the past 10 years in various academic hospitalist roles, she does have extensive outpatient experience having worked in full-time private practice the first 10 years of her career and she enjoys the continuity of care and relational aspect of primary care.

Clinical Interests: Preventative health care, obesity medicine, trauma-informed care, transitions of care, and hospital at home care. 

Hobbies: Spending time with her children, one of whom is currently a student at the University of Michigan College of Engineering (Go Blue!) and the other is a high school student. She keeps busy walking her two dogs Romeo and Rosie, enjoys outdoor activities including kayaking, running, and cycling and is always busy planning her next international adventure vacation. 


Allan Golden, MD

Clinical Instructor in Internal Medicine

Education & Career: Allan Golden, MD joined the Division of General Medicine as a full time Clinical Instructor on August 12, 2024, and will be practicing at the Northville Health Center. He is a graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan in 2022. Prior to joining Michigan Medicine, he worked as a primary care physician for two years in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Dr. Golden is board-certified in Internal Medicine. 

Clinical Interests: Primary and preventive care. He believes in patient centered care, developing an individualized health plan to best suit each patient’s needs. He also enjoys working with students and residents. 

Hobbies: In his free time, Dr. Golden enjoys spending time with his wife, his two young children, and his Goldendoodle. 


Noah Smith, MD

Clinical Instructor in Internal Medicine

Education & Career: Noah Smith, MD joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Clinical Instructor on August 26, 2024, and practices at the West Ann Arbor Health Center. Originally from Washington State, Dr. Smith earned his undergraduate and medical school degrees at the University of Washington in Seattle. He completed his internal medicine residency at New York University in New York City within that residency’s primary care track. Now at Michigan Medicine.

Clinical Interests: Dr. Smith takes pride in helping his patients manage their complex medical conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, substance use disorders, chronic kidney disease, and others. 

Hobbies: Outside of work, Dr. Smith enjoys running, climbing, playing board games and crosswords, and visiting friends and family. Dr. Smith is fluent in Spanish.


Sumit Agarwal, MD, MPH, PhD

Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, Assistant Professor of Health Management and Policy

Education & Career: Sumit Agarwal, MD, MPH, PhD joined the Division of General Medicine as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor on September 9, 2024. Prior to joining Michigan Medicine, he went to medical school at the Mayo Clinic and did his clinical training in internal medicine and primary care at the University of Virginia. He also recently completed his PhD in Health Policy and Economics from Harvard University while working as a primary care physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. 

Clinical Interests: In his research as a health economist and physician, Dr. Agarwal examines the health impacts of social, economic, and insurance policies. His research also explores several areas related to primary care, including its workforce, quality of care, and payment reform. His work has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Health Affairs. Dr. Agarwal will be seeing patients at the Taubman Center. 

Hobbies: In his free time, he enjoys running, playing tennis, reading, and spending time with his wife, two kids, and dog.


Hussein Almadhoun, MD, RPH, BCGP, MSc Clinical Pharm

Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine

Education & Career: Hussein Almadhoun, MD, RPH, BCGP, MSc Clinical Pharm joined the Divisions of Geriatric Medicine and General Medicine as an Clinical Assistant Professor on October 7, 2024 and will be practicing at the West Ann Arbor Health Center. He received his geriatric medicine training at Massachusetts general hospital, Harvard program where he also participated as a clinical preceptor for Harvard Medical School students. He completed his internal medicine residency at Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit where he engaged in providing medical education for students and interns. He also holds a bachelor's degree in pharmacy and master's degree in clinical pharmacy from University of Jordan. Prior to attending medical school at St. George's University School of Medicine, he worked as a consultant pharmacist gaining exposure in medication reviews, focusing on identifying Drug-Therapy Problems and providing clinical services to nursing homes.

Clinical Interests: Improving quality of life for patients, reducing polypharmacy and creating new generation physician’s that provide passionate health care.


Rachel Folz, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine

Education & Career: Rachel Folz, MD joined the division of General Internal Medicine on October 1, 2024, and will be practicing at the Saline Health Center. She graduated from Sidney Kimmel Medical college at Jefferson University in Philadelphia in 2015 and completed Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Chicago in 2022 where she specialized in women’s health within internal medicine. Prior to joining Michigan Medicine, she worked as an Assistant Professor in General Internal Medicine at Rush University in Chicago for 2 years. 

Clinical Interests: Primary and preventative health care, caring for patients with complex medical histories, and comprehensive women’s health care ranging from the provision of all forms of birth control through menopausal care.

Hobbies: Hiking, gardening, swimming and spending time with her husband and 2 young daughters.

Medical School News

Swap and shop events help laboratories donate and find valuable supplies

The Medical School is helping researchers save money and reduce waste by connecting laboratories with surplus supplies to those that can put them to immediate use. At three Lab Swap events held in the spring, more than 100 participants donated and “shopped” for valuable laboratory supplies at Medical Science Research Building 2, North Campus Research Complex, and A. Alfred Taubman Biomedical Science Research Building. The events rehomed more than 3,500 pounds of lab supplies, with a value of nearly $115,000.

Susan Murphy, Sc.D., OTR, named UMMS faculty chair-elect for women’s careers

Susan Murphy, Sc.D., OTR, FAOTA, a professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation and internal medicine, and research professor in the Institute of Gerontology, has been appointed faculty chair-elect for women’s careers in the Medical School. The chair-elect is one of several Medical School roles that focus on the advancement — and overall thriving — of women pursuing careers in academic medicine and science at Michigan Medicine. Murphy will become chair-elect in January 2027, serve as faculty chair in 2028-29, and after her term is complete, she will serve in an advisory role as post-chair in 2030-31.
