Adam Lauring, M.D., Ph.D., is the new Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Internal Medicine

Effective April 1, 2025, Adam Lauring, M.D., Ph.D., will serve as Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Lauring is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology in the Medical School and a Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan. He brings a wealth of experience in infectious disease research, clinical care, and mentorship. 

Dr. Lauring completed his undergraduate degree at Yale University and earned his M.D. and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Washington, Seattle. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine, a Chief Residency, and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he also pursued a postdoctoral fellowship in Virology before joining their faculty. In 2012, he was recruited to the University of Michigan as an Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine and Microbiology and Immunology. He later expanded his academic appointments to the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and has since been promoted to Professor, with tenure. 

At Michigan Medicine, Dr. Lauring’s research focuses on RNA virus evolution, examining viral mutation rates and their implications. Recently, he was awarded a $10 million NIH grant to establish the Michigan Infectious Disease Genomics (MIDGE) Center alongside Dr. Evan Snitkin and Dr. Teresa O’Meara. This center will leverage whole genome sequencing and functional genomic assays to study the genetic factors influencing pathogen behavior, transmission, and drug resistance.

Beyond his research, Dr. Lauring is a dedicated educator and mentor, actively shaping the next generation of scientists. His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including being named a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Academy of Microbiology, and the American Society for Clinical Investigation as well as receiving the Department of Internal Medicine’s Chair’s Impact Award and the UM Engineering Ted Kennedy Family Faculty Team Excellence Award. He has served on the Governing Council of the American Society for Virology and the Research Committee of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He is currently Deputy Editor at the Journal of Infectious Diseases. 

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children and cheering for Scuderia Ferrari.
