First in Family at the University of Michigan Medical School provides medical students who are first-generation (defined as students with parents who do not have four-year degrees) and/or low-income with the academic, professional, financial, and community resources necessary to succeed in medical school and in the medical profession.
First in Family is dedicated to reducing inequalities for students in the Medical School through facilitating mentorship relationships, organizing events that cultivate diversity, sharing funding opportunities, and partnering with the Office of Admissions to increase recruitment and representation.
Through these efforts and resources, we hope to elevate students from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine and help provide the necessary support to build a successful medical career.
