Thomas Hudson Sanderson, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Sanderson serves as a reviewer for multiple granting agencies, including the American Heart Association as Chair of the Collaborative Science Award Committee, the Department of Defense, and recently completed a 6-year term as standing member of the Neural Oxidative Metabolism, Mitochondria and Cell Death Study Section for the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Sanderson currently serves as an associate editor for the FASEB Journal. Research in the Sanderson lab is focused on understanding brain damage caused by acute ischemic or traumatic insults to the brain suffered during cardiac arrest, ischemic stroke, neonatal hypoxia/ischemia, and trauma. Ongoing mechanistic studies are focused on uncovering novel pathologic mechanisms of inner mitochondrial membrane proteins involved in mitochondrial dynamics, quality control, cristae maintenance, and cell death execution. A second area of focus is the development and clinical translation of neuroprotective therapies that modulate the activity of mitochondria to reduce brain injury. Pre-clinical large animal studies are ongoing to evaluate a novel therapeutic strategy that limits mitochondrial hyperactivity and reduces brain injury following ischemia or trauma. This research has resulted in multiple awarded US patents, which formed the foundation of a startup company focused on bringing novel therapies to clinical implementation for ischemic brain injury. Ongoing studies supported by the NIH and DoD are focused on investigating the mechanisms of this therapy through continued testing in translational models of disease, along with regulatory testing of human therapy devices that can bring this treatment to the clinic.
