    • About

    Dr. Schmitzberger's primary research investigates resuscitation science, with a particular emphasis on out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Dr. Schmitzberger also co-leads a Department of Defense-funded project aimed at developing clinical practice guidelines for the resuscitation of trauma patients. He has worked extensively in global health. In addition to his research, he serves as the Medical Director of the Special Operations Combat Medic Course at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI, and the Medical Director of the Paramedic Division of the Genesee County Sheriff's Department.

    U-M Emergency Medicine Helps Bring Pre-Hospital Blood Transfusions to Genesee County EMS

    Emergency medical services (EMS) teams in the county are now prepared to administer blood transfusions in the field, a capability currently available in only about 1–2% of EMS agencies nationwide. The effort, led in part by University of Michigan Department of Emergency Medicine faculty and residents, launched on May 1, 2026.

    It takes a village: Michigan Medicine celebrates cardiac arrest survivors

    On October 14, Michigan Medicine’s Department of Emergency Medicine and the Samuel and Jean Frankel Cardiovascular Center, with support from the Max Harry Weil Institute for Critical Care Research and Innovation, hosted the first-ever Cardiac Arrest Survivor Celebration Dinner. Survivors gathered with the very people who once fought to keep them alive, in a night that honored not only patients who beat the odds, but also the many hands that made their recoveries possible.

Weil Institute member Dr. Florian Schmitzberger was recently named Medical Director of the SOCM course at Hurley and speaks more about this unique military-civilian partnership and the changing landscape of combat casualty care.
