    Randall S. Sung, M.D., is a Professor of Surgery in the Section of Transplantation Surgery at the University of Michigan. He did his general surgery residency training at Columbia, and his clinical fellowship at the University of Michigan. After two years at Mount Sinai in New York, in late 2002 Dr. Sung returned to the University of Michigan, where he is a multi-organ transplant surgeon and the Surgical Director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation. He has also served as the Fellowship Program Director and Medical Student Facilitator for the Section of Transplantation Surgery.

    Dr. Sung has been the MPLAN Medical Director for the University Hospital 5C inpatient unit since 2012. Over the past decade, the 5C MPLAN Leadership team has engaged in many successful initiatives to increase safety, enhance physician- nursing communication, and improve efficiency of clinical care. They also previously represented the UH inpatient units on the UHCVC Operations Committee.

    Dr. Sung has provided extensive service to the transplant community. He has a long history of leadership for the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS), most recently as Councilor-at-Large. He is currently Councilor-at-Large for the Transplant Accreditation and Certification Council. He has also held leadership positions for the Organ Donation and Transplantation Alliance and Gift of Life Michigan

    Research Overview

    Dr. Sung's research interests include kidney and pancreas transplantation outcomes, deceased donor organ utilization, and transplant program performance evaluation. He was a Co-investigator for the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) and is currently part of a UM Kidney Epidemiology and Cost Center team that provides analytic support to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for the evaluation of dialysis facilities, organ procurement organizations, and transplant centers.
