Mark C. Bicket, MD, PhD, F.A.S.A. is the Co-Director of the Overdose Prevention Engagement Network and Associate Professor at the University of Michigan Medical School with a joint appointment in the School of Public Health. A clinician-scientist and practicing physician anesthesiologist, his work has been supported by NIH, SAMHSA, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). Dr. Bicket’s research, which has appeared in JAMA, BMJ, and Annals of Surgery, focuses on pain management and interventions to reduce opioid-related harms. He is the Principal Investigator of the PCORI-funded CARES trial (Comparing Analgesic Regimen Effectiveness and Safety), an international pragmatic randomized trial to examine the association between commonly prescribed treatments for postoperative pain with patient-reported outcomes at up to 6 months after surgery.

Originally from Edmond, Oklahoma, Dr. Bicket completed his MD and PhD at Johns Hopkins, where he served as Chief Resident in anesthesiology. He completed pain medicine fellowship training at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Previously, he served as Director of the nationally recognized Pain Medicine Fellowship Program and Director of Pain Medicine Quality and Safety, where he led Johns Hopkins in creating its first system-wide pain management policy that impacted millions of patients receiving care there every year. Dr. Bicket served as a White House Fellow and has advised the National Academy of Medicine, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, state governments, and national organizations. He maintains board certifications in pain medicine and anesthesiology and is a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
