    New initiative aims to bridge gap between emergency room and long-term treatment for opioid addiction

    A new University of Michigan-led program aims to help rural communities improve access to evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder and create smoother transitions from emergency care to long-term support. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Rural Health Transformation Program has awarded U-M's OPEN a $1.5 million, 14-month grant to launch the Rural Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Link Initiative.

    Opioids for dental pain still more common in U.S.

    A Michigan Medicine study finds that the U.S. outside Puerto Rico still has a high rate of dental opioid pain medication prescription filling compared with other developed nations, despite steep drops in recent years because of guidelines spurred by the opioid crisis.

    Michigan Anesthesiology ranks No. 2 in NIH funding

    The University of Michigan Department of Anesthesiology is ranked second in the country for National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding in the 2025 Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research rankings. In FY2025, U-M Anesthesiology researchers received more than $20.8 million in NIH funding for 28 projects.

    New insights on persistent opioid use after surgery and genetic associations to opioid use disorder

    In a recent edition of Genetic Epidemiology, Aubrey C. Annis and mentors Gonçalo R. Abecasis and Chad Brummett have new insights to share on these genetic associations in their publication, “Genetic Associations of Persistent Opioid Use After Surgery Point to OPRM1 but Not Other Opioid-Related Loci as the Main Driver of Opioid Use Disorder”.
