  • About

Christine Veenstra, MD, MSHP, is an Associate Professor (with tenure) in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology. She is also co-Leader of Cancer Control and Population Sciences for the Rogel Cancer Center. She was previously the Vice Chair of the Rogel Cancer Center Emerging Leaders Council, served on the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI) Early Career Faculty Advisory Council, and was an IHPI Emerging Scholar. She completed her undergraduate training at the University of Michigan and her medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine. She then completed her internal medicine residency training at the University of Michigan, where she also served as Chief Medical Resident. She then completed medical oncology fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania, where she served as Chief Fellow and also earned a Masters degree in Health Policy Research concurrent with her medical oncology fellowship. Dr. Veenstra cares for patients with gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, with a focus on colorectal cancer. Her research is focused on non-clinical factors that affect the value, quality, and delivery of cancer care across the continuum. She has been continuously externally funded since 2015 and has received grant funding from the National Cancer Institute, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, and the Hope Foundation. Dr. Veenstra is currently the PI of two R-level Awards from the NCI—an R37 Merit Award to partner with the Georgia and LA County SEER registries to study use of targeted and immunotherapies among patients with metastatic cancers, and an R01 Award (multi-PI with Dr. Hawley) to conduct a pragmatic randomized controlled trial of a dyadic intervention for colorectal cancer survivors and their support persons across National Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) practices within the SWOG research base.
