I am a board-certified abdominal radiologist and medical ultrasound researcher with more than 15 years of experience in the development and application of novel ultrasound technologies for the improvement of healthcare. I served as the Chair of the Therapeutic Ultrasound Community of Practice at the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) from 2015 to 2017. As the director of Abdominal Ultrasound Division, I am one of the few radiologists at the University of Michigan (UM) to perform contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for the diagnosis of liver tumors and to conduct histotripsy ablation of liver tumors in patients. My previous research includes 1. Development of sonoelastography - a novel ultrasound elasticity imaging technique; 2. Tissue characterization of human prostate cancer and thermally ablated liver lesions; 3. Development of acoustic droplet vaporization for vascular and tissue occlusion and for the enhancement of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for cancer treatment. My recent research interests have been focused on 1. Quantitative imaging biomarkers for the diagnosis of severe peripheral arterial disease and for the characterization of sickle cell disease; 2. Partial histotripsy ablation of orthotopic liver tumor in an in vivo metastatic rodent tumor model; 3. Development and clinical translation of endocavity histotripsy for efficient tissue ablation; 4. Contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for renal obstruction. My clinical skills as a physician-scientist have given me insights into clinical and translational research on diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound. I have successfully conducted research projects, collaborated with clinicians, scientists, and engineers, and published multiple peer-reviewed articles. I am the PI of a prospective clinical research project funded by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Research Scholar Award (2019-2020). I was also funded by the Radiology Department Seed Grant for the investigation of quantitative ultrasound imaging of sickle cell disease (PI). I am currently funded by the Michigan Medicine-PKUHSC Joint Institute Award for quantitative vascular imaging of critical limb ischemia (co-PI), an NIH R01 for histotripsy of sarcoma (Co-I), the Focused Ultrasound Foundation Awards for investigating the impact of histotripsy dosing on liver cancer therapeutic outcomes (Co-I) and for patterning of mesenchymal stem cell differentiation for bone regeneration using focused ultrasound-mediated hydrogel stiffening (Co-I), and the Urology Department Grant for contrast enhanced ultrasound imaging of renal obstruction (Co-I). I am also a co-PI of a recently submitted NIH P01 grant. I have extensive research collaborations with clinicians, scientists and engineers. I have been applying extramural grants to support more of my translational research studies and will attend the NIH Grant review sessions in the near future.
