John Charpie, MD

John R. Charpie, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Michigan Medical School, and past Director of Pediatric Cardiology and Co-Director of the University of Michigan Congenital Heart Center. Dr. Charpie's clinical expertise is in pediatric cardiac intensive care medicine for infants, children, and young adults with congenital and pediatric-acquired heart disease. His research interests are focused on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury following cardiopulmonary bypass; acute and long-term outcomes following congenital heart surgery; vascular endothelial dysfunction, nitric oxide, and oxidative stress; clinical trials in congenital heart disease; and medical device development.

Dr. Charpie’s research focuses on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury associated with cardiopulmonary bypass and mechanical circulatory support, the biology of nitric oxide, and vascular endothelial dysfunction. As a cardiac intensive care physician, Dr. Charpie is also interested in examining early and late outcomes following acquired pediatric and congenital heart surgical and catheter-based interventions, and developing and testing novel devices and therapies aimed at improving morbidity and mortality including antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, and therapeutic hypothermia among others. Dr. Charpie serves as a Principal Investigator or Co-investigator for several government and industry-sponsored studies in pediatric cardiology.
