Dr. Sussman is a research scientist at the Center for Clinical Management Research at the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Health System and an associate professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School Department of Internal Medicine. He attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, completed internal medicine residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Michigan. His research is focused on developing and implementing strategies to make clinical decisions more personalized and effective, with a particular focus on using risk prediction to guide treatment decisions in common cardiometabolic conditions. He is also experienced in leading teams on communication science interventions and quality improvement. He has led larger projects using electronic health records for risk prediction, simulation models for decision analysis, and clustered randomized trials to guide implementation science.

    Research Overview

Dr. Sussman’s research focuses on improving the personal tailoring of medical decisions, particularly for preventing and treating cardiovascular disease and diabetes. He is especially interested in how risk prediction and decision analysis can be used with implementation science, and clinical policy to improve clinical practice and patient-centered care. His work incorporates epidemiology, risk prediction, decision sciences, implementation science, and pragmatic trials.
