Dr. Oren Sagher is the William F. Chandler Collegiate Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Michigan. He has been on faculty at the University since 1993, and is currently Associate Chair for Technological Innovations and Residency Program Director. In the latter role, he is responsible for running a busy neurosurgery residency training program, and mentoring numerous residents, fellows and students. His main clinical interest is in the domain of functional neurosurgery, encompassing the treatment of epilepsy, movement disorders and pain. He serves as the lead epilepsy surgeon at Michigan Medicine, and is interested in brain mapping and advanced imaging techniques in the operating room. Outside the university, Dr. Sagher has held leadership positions in national neurosurgical organizations, with a strong interest in neurosurgical education.

In addition to his work as an academic neurosurgeon, Dr. Sagher also has a strong interest in health-related information technology. In that vein, he created an online neurosurgical portal in 1999, and has continued to develop this platform over the years to a point where it currently informs and drives the care of all neurosurgical patients at the University of Michigan, supplying all providers within the department with timely information needed to optimize the care of their patients. This information system has been extended for use in other services, such as Radiation Oncology and Stroke Neurology.

    Research Overview

Dr. Sagher has a long-standing interest in the regulation of cerebral blood flow, particularly as it relates to neurostimulation. He has led an R01-funded research effort into cerebral blood flow regulation, stroke, and electrical neurostimulation. In addition, he has had an interest in brain tumor imaging, and has been funded by an NIH Quantum grant to study the use of targeted nanoparticles to image brain tumors within the operating room.
