I am the Medical Director of Lung Transplantation at UM. I oversee all clinical, programmatic, and educational components of the Lung Transplantation Program. I am involved in translational and outcomes research, including NIH-funded multicenter studies. In addition, I am site PI of a clinical trial to study the role of a novel drug in preventing transplant rejection. I have developed curricula for students, residents, fellows, junior attendings, and non-physician learners in the clinical management of pre- and post-lung transplant patients. I chair several monthly interdisciplinary meetings to integrate my program with the great UM Transplant Center including a meeting to select and list transplant candidates, and morbidity and mortality and QI meetings. Based on my international reputation as an expert in the field, I have been invited to serve on multiple committees of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), which oversees lung transplantation throughout the United States. My role on these committees included developing and approving a new allocation system for prioritization and waitlist rank and lung allocation to reduce deaths on the waitlist, improve access, and mitigate tissue injury. I am the current Vice-Chair of the Lung Committee through June 2027, and will be the Chair of the Lung Committee from 2027-2029.
From 2019-2021, I served as MPLAN Medical Director of the 8D Medical Surgical Intermediate respiratory unit, During this period, my role ballooned rapidly expanded to include co-managing (with other unit Medical Directors, ACCO, AOD, ACNO, and CMO) the staffing, bed management, and conversion of 6 units to medical ICUs to house up to 250 COVID patients.
